Santa, Anne, William & Mozart

Every day is a serious day for a person with diabetes.  We must calculate each bite we put in our mouths and we must be aware of our environments.  Our emotions play just as an important part in managing our diabetes as monitoring our food intake and medicating appropriately.

Sugar Dog Mozart, our Social Worker Anne, and little gentleman William are asking Santa for a Cure!  And for Your Help as we coach people with diabetes to train Sugar Dogs!  Watch William in October in his video about Sugar Dogs. It’s pretty terrific!

Santa is courtesy of Florida Poodle Rescue.  Thanks Santa!

6-18-2012 –

“One Nation Under Dog” is set to premiere at 9pm on Monday, June 18th on HBO.”  Nearly two years in the making, the film tells a complicated and unwavering story that explores our relationship with dogs.

The film chronicles those who would protect their animals with regard for little else, the many manifestations of grief from losing a pet, and the brutal truth behind the euthanasia of 4-6 million homeless animals in the US each year and the people who fight to save their lives. See the trailer here.PAWS New England was honored and humbled to be asked to participate in the film and did everything in our power to painstakingly highlight the struggles faced by all of us in the rescue community. We hope this will change the way homeless animals are treated in the United States and abroad by educating a largely unaware audience of both the staggering horrors and inspiring tales of survival present in the world of dog rescue. Every rescue group can benefit from this film as viewers will be both horrified by the reality and inspired by the power to save a life. This presents an amazing opportunity for us to help homeless animals in need. PAWS New England will be encouraging our volunteers to host screening parties for their friends and families. We will encourage party-goers to “Take Action” by adopting, fostering, donating, committing to spay/neuter, and promoting legislative and lobbying efforts to end puppy mills and gas chambers. Take this moment and harness the passion that the movie will undoubtedly provoke. Educate. Recruit volunteers and adopters. Raise funds. Join the fun on facebook and let this movie inspire.

Host a Viewing Party

In order for this movie to spurn a movement that will save the lives of hundreds of thousands of abandoned animals, people need to see it! We ask rescue groups from all over the country to encourage your volunteers to host viewing parties for friends and families on the night of the premiere.

Hosts need only invite over a few friends and tune in. We are asking hosts from all over the country to sign up here and put their city on the map! Let’s show America hundreds of screening parties on our google map! All rescues will likely create unique ideas for screening parties, but we invite hosts to use the PAWS New England “party package” with dog-themed drinks, vegan appetizers and desserts.

We invite everyone to join the virtual party on this facebook page!

Don’t have HBO, but want to see the movie? Contact your local cable company and inquire about a HBO trial.

Positive Feedback for HBO There were many moments over the last year where it looked as though this film might not make it to production. The executives at HBO were concerned that too few people would be interested in a documentary about rescue dogs to justify the expense of making the film. We passionately pledged that animal lovers from all walks of life would tune in and we need you to help us make good on our promise. In addition to watching the film, we strongly encourage each and every supporter of rescue to:

  • Show your support for the film on this HBO Documentary Facebook Page
  • Leave feedback for the HBO executives on “Join the Conversation” and let them know you want to see more rescue-themed programming
  • Request that HBO commission a follow-up documentary exclusively about rescue that further explores the stories of the featured dogs
  • A tremendous thank-you for the amazing and selfless work you do. We hope this film will make it just a little easier to save the lives of innocent animals. Many thanks, Dr. Kelly Parker Cofounder PAWS New England

Sugar Dogs International cannot attend this event due to a calendar conflict.  If you are searching for a dog, this is a nice place to start.  Please remember that you are searching for a Sugar Dog NOT A PET!  You want the smartest dog you can find, not the one with the saddest eyes, not necessarily the one that is the most active.  You want a dog that has intelligent eyes and a nice self-confidence.  With Poodles, I always look at them ALL over.  Is the tail held high?  Is the dog playing with its litter mates?  I want to look at their teeth, although some are not as keen on this as I am.  Has the animal been spayed or neutered?  If not and the dog is older than 4 months – it’s high time.  Sugar Dogs International supports neutered males and an spayed females.

While Sugar Dogs International cannot attend this event, it is highly recommended if you are searching for a pet.  Apply online to Florida Poodle Rescue or contact the Poodle Club of America for the names of reputable breeders in the USA if you are looking for a Poodle.  Addresses to your right.  All dogs should be someone’s pet.  Poodles are family.

10-28-12 – Florida Poodle Picnic

Rescue a Poodle.  Train it as a Diabetic Alert Dog, and then ask, “Who rescued whom?”

The picnic is 10-28-12 @ 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm!

Since 1994, Florida Poodle Rescue (FPR) has been dedicated to Poodles. We rescue, foster, rehabilitate and permanently place Poodles in caring adopted homes. The cost of medical care, medicine, and behavioral rehabilitation is rising, so we need your help. Many rescued abused, abandoned, and unwanted Poodles have special physical, medical, or behavioral needs, often translating into increased foster care, prior to being placed in a permanent home of a loving family.

FRP has teamed up with Sugar Dogs International to offer “Seniors Saving Seniors,” a program for Type 2 diabetics (over 40, under exercised and overweight) to adopt an older Poodle to train as a diabetic alert dog.  See Chapter 3 of The Peach Stories on this website for Pat’s story about Mozart, a rescued Maltese-Poodle.

The FPR Annual Picnic is the perfect time to “shop” for a Poodle as many available, adorable Poodles will be available at the picnic.  Come meet them, allow your special Poodle the opportunity of adopting YOU.  Then you can ask yourself the question, “Who really rescued whom?”

Check out the Florida Poodle Rescue website, make contact and get YOUR invitation to the annual picnic.  A small donation of $10 per person is required to attend and everyone brings a covered dish to share.  LOCATION:  15521 Furlong Cir., Odessa, FL 33556.

Those of you with Poodles that were not adopted from FPR are invited to participate and yes, you may bring your Sugar Dogs to this event.  Wear your red shirts and your dogs must be on leash or in a cart to begin the event.  After you’re inside the gates, there are 17 acres of fully fenced “run-run” space.

Joy is seeing Oodles of Poodles running with delight!  There will be big dogs and little dogs and every color under the rainbow.  There will also be dogs of other breeds.  (Makes me think of Rita Rudner’s quiry:  “I wonder if other dogs think Poodles are members of a weird religious cult.”)

12-1-12 – St. Pete Santa Parade with Florida Poodle Rescue

St. Petersburg
Santa Parade

    The annual St. Petersburg Holiday Parade is set for Saturday, Dec. 1.
We will NOT be starting out at Tricia’s house this year.  This is the proposed parade route, please park and meet us when you can:
The 84th annual St. Petersburg Lions Club Santa Parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 1, at the corner of Central Ave. and Fifth St. and follows a slightly different route this year. The parade travels east on Central to Second St., turns left to First Ave. N, turns right and goes east along First Ave. N. for two blocks to Beach Drive, then finally turns north to Fifth Ave. NE, disbanding near the Renaissance Vinoy Resort. Parade participants will begin assembling as early as 8 a.m., and the route will closed to traffic until approximately noon. The parade route will be cleared of all vehicles on Saturday during the early morning hours. Residents who park on-street Friday night should ensure they move their vehicles before 5 a.m. Also new this year: during Snowfest winter activities Saturday in North Straub Park, Bayshore Drive NE will be closed to traffic between Second and Fifth Avenues NE. Parking for the parade, and the Snowfest that follows throughout the afternoon in North Straub Park, is available at South Core and BayWalk Parking Garages.  In previous years we have met in the vicinity of 3rd and 4th streets off of Central – we don’t know too far in advance the exact location of where our float is supposed to be – Just look for the BIG white poodle with lots of happy poodles prancing around it!Smaller dogs and their people have ridden on the float, while the big guys and their owners get to walk along. But there’s plenty of room on the float for anyone who can’t or doesn’t want to walk. Attire is red T-shirts or sweatshirts and jeans or black pants. And if you have a Santa or elf hat, that works, too. The four-footed kids – especially the ones who are walking – are asked to have bells attached to their collars, so that everyone on the parade route knows we’re coming.  If your Sugar Dog cannot stand the thought of wearing bells, consider attaching them to your dog cart.

barney and tootsie

We need some holiday elves to help refresh the FPR float for this year’s St. Petersburg Santa Parade on Dec. 1.
We’ll be meeting at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 30, at Tricia Bonati’s house, 1650 Beach Drive N.E., St. Petersburg.
Many hands make light work, but along with the activity comes a lot of fun. Stop by for a few minutes, an hour or so or stay till Tricia sends us home.
Chances are you’ll get to see old friends and maybe meet some new people. It’s a great way to usher in the Holiday season.
In the past, we’ve had a covered dish lunch with Florida Poodle Rescue; however, this year, money is tight for all non-profit organizations.  We suggest that you bring water to drink during the parade and a picnic for your party to enjoy afterward.  No group luncheon is planned.  Please bring your own water and lunch.
Hope to see you on Saturday!

12-12-12 – Queen of Sugar Dogs International Photo Shoot

Our Queen of Sugar Dogs International, Marissa Jeter, will be photographed with her 2 Sugar Dogs on Wed., 12-12-12 by Nicole Geller Photography!  Lancome and Sak’s Fifth Avenue have generously donated a make-over and The Palm is hosting the Queen and her Sugar Dogs for lunch.

While this is a private event, every year Sugar Dogs International hosts a “Dutch treat” event in February in honor of one of our clients who has worked extremely hard to achieve service dog status with their very own Sugar Dog.  Marissa won for 2012.  She began with an Australian Cattle Dog, a beautiful Blue Heeler.  Marissa and her family worked with Lily for many, many months before they finally decided to search for a Poodle.

At that point, Marissa really lucked out.  She found a puppy with a good bloodline to purchase in Louisiana and the breeder, learning that the pup was to be a Sugar Dog, offered her the pup’s mother as well.

Marissa and her family rescued Lucy Lou and adopted Scarlet O’Hare before the Independence Day Holiday (7-4-2011), by September BOTH dogs were alerting to Marissa’s high and low blood glucose levels.  Marissa and her family have continued to work with both dogs and both little red-headed girls are recognized as Sugar Dogs.

Marissa (and her loving and patient family) worked very hard to achieve diabetic alert service dog status for the “little redheaded girls” and Sugar Dogs International is delighted to honor Marissa for her good, hard work.

Lucy Lou and Scarlet O’Hare are red toy Poodles!

Hey, if you want a Photo Shoot with your Sugar Dog contact Nicole Geller Photography in Tampa, FL (813-837-4686) or take your Sugar Dog to the Florida Poodle Rescue event for a photo with Santa!  See below.

February 8–10, 2013: Healing the Heart, Carlsbad, California

Emotional pain takes many forms: the grief of loss, overwhelming stress and anxiety, major or chronic depression, job burnout, feeling stuck or trapped, heart-break, lingering guilt, regret, fear of trusting again, pent-up anger, worry about the future, and shame from the past.

In the face of difficulty, most of us do our best to cope with the situation, hold it together, and keep going, but we often end up carrying emotional pain that we don’t know how to heal or release. The toxic residue of painful experiences gets stored in our emotional heart, limiting our ability to give and receive love. If you want to break free from the past and experience emotional freedom, we invite you to join us at the Healing the Heart workshop. In our safe, nurturing setting, you will be guided in the unique five-step healing process developed by Chopra Center co-founder Dr. David Simon that has helped thousands let go of their pain, find freedom from the past, and rediscover joy and fulfillment.

Healing the Heart is led by the Chopra Center’s Medical Director, Dr. Tim Brieske, and Trista Thorp, the Certification Program Coordinator of Chopra Center University. Along with other loving members of the Chopra Center staff, they will support and guide you in freeing yourself from the burden of accumulated pain, anger, guilt, and other difficult emotions.

This is an intensive weekend workshop that allows you to reach deep levels of emotional release and healing in a short amount of time. Whether you’ve recently experienced an upsetting event or loss, or you’ve been carrying the burden of old emotional wounds for many years, Healing the Heart will help you find emotional freedom.

Digestive problems, chronic pain, and fatigue can all reflect underlying emotional malnourishment. If you are willing to look at the story behind your illness, release the toxic emotions you’ve been carrying, and begin thinking and doing things differently, healing and transformation will occur.” ~ David Simon, M.D.

March 15-17, 2013 at the Florida State Fair Grounds in Tampa

Sugar Dogs’ favorite and Official dog magazine, The New Barker has been invited to co-host the Spring Fling Adoption Expo during Florida’s Largest Home Show, March 15-17 at the Florida State Fairgrounds. Our 20×20 booth indoors is being dubbed The New Barker Dog House. We will be doing all kinds of demos over the three-day event. The organizers Turner Expositions, has been doing the Home Show twice a year for the last 26 years, and they will be spending quite a bit of money on advertising to promote the show.

 It’s pretty exciting for The New Barker, as we will be in a venue that is home-focused versus strictly pet-focused, enabling us to reach a different mindset, so to speak.

One of the demos will include The Working Dog. Sugar Dogs International will give a presentation on Friday 3-15-13 afternoon and Sunday 3-17-13 afternoon.  It would be wonderful if our SDI Royalty and your dogs would be available too. The following is our initial promo/description of The Working Dog seminar:

The Working Dog

Dogs want a purpose to feel fulfilled – physically and mentally. Training a dog the basics is the first step. If someone is interested in something more with their dogs, this will be an informative demonstration/seminar. We’ll include: Sugar Dogs International – dogs trained to alert their diabetic handlers of high or low blood sugar levels;

Therapy Dogs International – dogs trained to go into nursing homes, hospitals to interact with patients;

Freestyle – kids dancing with their dogs. This promotes responsible dog ownership with kids.

If you plan to attend, please wear your red shirt and of course, make sure that your dog is clean and well groomed.

We will continue to honor our Queen of Hearts, Marissa, and her two toy Poodles during this event too!  Marissa is a 16 year old Type 1 diabetic from Dade City.  She has worked hard to train two Sugar Dogs.  We hope that our Princess Kaitlin from St. Petersburg will join us as well.  She too is a Type one diabetic, age 13, who has trained a beautiful Collie as her Sugar Dog.  Come join us and show off your Sugar Dog.

Diabetic assistance by these animals is protected under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).

We are honored to support the Dade City Youth Council for four (4) years running!

If you are local,  please join us.  If you are not local, we practically guarantee there is a St. Patrick’s Day event near you.  Take your Sugar Dog and show it off!

April 30, 2013 –  Princess Royal of Sugar Dogs International Photo Shoot

Our Princess Royal of Sugar Dogs International, Kaitlin Radcliffe, will be photographed with her Sugar Dog by Nicole Geller Photography!

While this is photo shoot a private event, every year Sugar Dogs International hosts a “Dutch treat” event in February in honor of one of our clients who has worked extremely hard to achieve service dog status with their very own Sugar Dog.  Kaitlin won for 2013.  She began with a beautiful Collie.

Kaitlin and her family worked with Dakota for many months on obedience before beginning our training method.  Dakota is still a puppy and yet she is alerting to Kaitlin’s high and low blood glucose (BG) levels.  Kaitlin and her family plan to continue to work with Sugar Dog Dakota.

Sugar Dogs International is delighted to honor Kaitlin as our Princess Royal for her good, hard work.  Best wishes!

To schedule your own visit with Nicole Geller Photography, please call 813-837-4686.

If you’d like to share a photo of you and your Sugar Dog, please send it to  MySugarDogs@gmail.com.  thank you!

June 14–16, 2013: Healing the Heart, Carlsbad, California

Good Morning:

Last week, more than 160 delegates from JDRF’s 2013 Children’s Congress stormed Capitol Hill, asking their Members of Congress to sign onto a letter being circulated by House and Senate Diabetes Caucus leaders in support of the Special Diabetes Program (SDP). Please join us now in asking your Members of Congress to sign the letter, by July 31st. Your action today will send a very clear message to Congress about the importance of the SDP and what it means to the future of those living with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

The SDP must be renewed this year to continue to build upon the groundbreaking research advances made to date, and to explore innovative new opportunities that lie ahead. While accelerating progress towards a cure, the SDP is developing better treatments and technologies to help manage the disease and reduce costly complications. Without these critical advancements, the costs related to diabetes will continue to go up, and the ultimate goal to end T1D altogether will be delayed.

We need YOUR help! Please take a quick moment to Email your Members of Congress to ask them to sign the SDP letter. We need as many Members of Congress on this letter as possible, and last year, we had strong support in Congress and the SDP was renewed. Today, we need your help in both the House andSenate to extend the SDP again this year! Finally, please don’t forget to forward this Email along to family and friends, and share this action alert on your favorite social media sites.

Thanks for all you do!

See below for Dr. Faustman’s Update:

Hi Everyone,

Our new paper, “Persistence of Prolonged C-peptide Production in Type 1 Diabetes as Measured With an Ultrasensitive C-peptide Assay,” appears in the March 2012 issue of Diabetes Care. In it, we discuss our finding that many people with type 1 diabetes–not just the rare few–may continue making insulin for decades!

Traditionally, most physicians and researchers have believed that the ability of the pancreas to produce insulin rapidly turns off within about 1 year of a type 1 diabetes diagnosis–with the rare exception of a lucky few patients who continue to make insulin for the long-term. Building on research conducted by other laboratories over the years, our new study shows that it is not just the lucky few, but actually the majority of people with type 1 diabetes who continue to have some level of insulin production, even decades after diagnosis. Using an ultrasensitive test to measure C-peptide, we saw that the ability of the pancreas to produce insulin undergoes a slow, gradual decline–not the rapid decline we have traditionally expected. Even among patients with disease duration of 31 to 40 years, 10 percent of them still produced C-peptide when we evaluated them using the ultrasensitive test.

This is significant for people with advanced type 1 diabetes, because it means that even they may have the potential for having their existing beta cells boosted or regenerated with new treatments. To us, it also means that more clinical trials should start focusing on people with a longer history of disease, rather than solely on the newly diagnosed.

Want to read more? You can find the press release  here and our coverage in New Scientist here.  You can also watch my interview with  Manny Hernandez of TuDiabetes, who was kind enough to talk with me more about our findings.

Best,

Denise L. Faustman, MD, PhD

Oct. 4, 2013  12:15 pm  Celebration Lunch at The Palm honoring Randall L. and his Sugar Dog STORMIN’ NORMAN, their trainer Jacqui Silla of The Canine Company, and our most official Spanish Ambassador Vivian Calabria-Seda and her Sugar Dog, POPCORN.

All the Sugar Dogs behaved very well and we were proud of them.  Once again, we sat by the Fountain and enjoyed the wonderful shade provided by The Palm’s umbrellas.  It truly was a lovely event.

Randall reported that he and his Sugar Dog STORMIN’ NORMAN went home to crash.  They had a great time but were worn out.  So were the rest of us, Randall, and yet we all came away with great ideas.

practice deeper and help infuse your life with joy.

Experiencing both of these beautiful tools and practices away from the noisy demands of modern life will open you to unimaginable gifts of inner and outer transformation.

Since ancient times, music and meditation have been foundational practices in many of the world’s sacred and healing traditions, helping people awaken to higher states of consciousness, healing, and bliss.

Seduction of Spirit: Meditation Event of the Year is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the gifts of these complementary practices, as you commune with the divine music in your heart and the inner silence of your soul.

A variety of musical experiences will be woven into each day’s activities. Here are just a few of the highlights:

  • Deepen the union of your body, mind, and spirit with live music at the daily Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga classes – including the beautiful artistry of Beth Nielsen Chapman, an Emmy award-winning songwriter and musician

Sages & Scientists, LaCosta, Carlsbad, CA – Aug. 22-24, 2014

Our Future Depends on Spirituality & Science

It’s commonly accepted that science and spirituality are not compatible. Science is considered our reliable way forward, while spirituality often regarded as a sentimental relic of our past we can’t quite let go of.

 Our Future Depends on Spirituality & Science

So to say it is necessary for the two to work together may seem unrealistic. For centuries, science has led our progress; spirituality, as indicated through participation in orthodox religion has been in steady decline. But the unorganized, personal aspect of spirituality is the subjective pursuit of value, reality, and understanding through individual experience or consciousness. This aspect of spirituality has not declined. Instead, the drive to find external solutions to global problems that have value to our interior world is more powerful than ever. The scale of our planet’s problems is too great to be solved without an integrated approach of science and spirituality. The power of consciousness needs the systemization of the scientific method, and the tools of science depend on the wisdom and creativity of individual consciousness to guide it in a meaningful direction.

More and more scientists are recognizing this need. In part because fundamental science has come to a place where the ultimate questions of matter and creation cannot be understood unless consciousness is accounted for and factored in. Consciousness may well be the common ground on which the objective and subjective worlds are derived and united. With this vision, scientists have begun to meet and discuss solutions to global issues of health, hunger, conflict resolution, climate change, and economic injustice from a perspective that joins science and spirituality.

The Sages and Scientists Symposium sponsored by the Chopra Foundation is just one of these gatherings and it will be held August 22-24, 2014 in Carlsbad California. It will bring together not only eminent scientists but also leading lights in spirituality based in the development of consciousness. Spirituality is rooted in the idea that a transcendent reality exists beyond the external realm of the senses. This is pure consciousness, the source of the subjective world or the mind as well the objective world of matter.

But the symposium talks are not focused on abstract questions of what preceded the Big Bang, or what is the nature of dark matter. Presentations are aimed at finding practical solutions for pressing issues like Alzheimer’s, clean water, obesity, women’s rights, hunger, and diabetes. Our future depends on the concerted effort of science and spirituality working together, because separately, neither has been up to the monumental task. Science works fine in everyday affairs without dealing with spirituality. And on the other side, spirituality can continue serving people’s spiritual needs as they go through their individual insights, crises and awakenings. However, unless the two views join forces, we won’t be using our full human capability to solve problems. Such a comprehensive human effort is precisely what global solutions require. Beyond providing a platform for addressing humanity’s problems, the joint efforts of science and spirituality promises to be the foundation for the next evolutionary leap in human potential.

12-1-2014 – Sugar Boy’s Birthday Party

This year was a blow out year for Sugar Boy’s birthday.  We don’t know how old he is and we don’t know when his birthday is but he’s such a loving guy that we knew he had to be a Sagittarius so we gave him a day to celebrate right in the middle of the sign.  It’s also our dear friend Rose in New Zealand’s birthday.

The Holly Terrace at Starlight Cottage was decorated for Christmas and high tea was enjoyed by Pat, Mozart and Rocky, Darla, Wren and Bobby, Kristi, Kennedy, Riley, Peaches, Paula and of course, Sugar Boy.  The humans enjoyed high tea while the dogs were provided separate areas for large dogs (2) and small dogs (5).

~~~~~~~~~~
12-16-14 – Timothy Doyle Nunnery
It is with deepest sadness that we release the information about Tim.  He celebrated his 64th birthday (12-13-14) in Florida Hospital on Princeton St. in Winter Park.  From there, he had hoped to be transferred into rehab and then possibly assisted living; however, his plans fell through.  Or rather should we very honestly say, Tim fell through the cracks in the social services system.  He was released from the hospital on a cold day to a second floor apartment in an historic building with an electric space heater.  His hip prosthesis was failing and he had fallen in the street, which is why he was at Florida Hospital.  Tim reported on his birthday that he think he had suffered an aneurism like his grandmother.
At this time, neither the investigating Detective Landry of the Orlando Police Department, the Orlando Fire Department nor the Orange County Medical Examiner have released the cause of Tim’s death.  His blood glucose was high, his body was burned and the historic building was condemned due to fire and smoke damages.
Like his father “Mutt” and his uncle “Doc,” Tim was a Type 1 diabetic, insulin dependent.  He had survived HIV+ for more than 21 years.  He was predeceased by his parents, Edna Louise Tillman Nunnery and her husband Marvette, and younger twin Thomas Claire Nunnery.  Tim is survived by brothers James Edward Nunnery, Michael Ford Nunnery, Phillip Melvin Nunnery and sister Sylvia T. Mattair.
The family appreciates your continued thoughts and prayers.
9-19-15 Tampa Bay Rowdies 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM, Al Lang Stadium
Please join the Sugar Dogs at Hillsborough County Public Schools Spirit Night at Al Lang Stadium, 230 1st Street SE, St. Petersburg, Fla. 33701.  Tickets for this event may be purchased at any Hillsborough County Public School or via email/US mail to:  MySugarDogs@gmail.com
This is a red shirt night so please wear yours and join us.  Sugar Dogs are welcome wearing appropriate identification (patch on vest or scarf).
Situated on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront next to the Salvador Dali Museum and Mahaffey Theater, the iconic stadium used to be home to the Tampa Bay Rays for their spring training. Over the years, several other Major League Baseball teams, including the Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets, New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, have used the stadium as their headquarters for spring training. The St. Petersburg Athletic Park at the current site of Al Lang Stadium was the spring home for the Boston Braves and New York Yankees from 1923 until after World War II, hosting such baseball greats such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Stan Musial. The first incarnation of the current field was built for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1947.
Gates open 90 minutes prior to kickoff for all Tampa Bay Rowdies home matches. Fans sitting in the Midfielder’s Club or Midfielder’s Reserved seating sections may enter the stadium through a dedicated gate on 1st St. SE, across from the Hilton, for their convenience. Fans with tickets for any other seating areas can enter the stadium through gates 2 or 3, adjacent to the Al Lang Stadium parking lots. Strollers are permitted, but must be parked in designated areas.
Parking
The Al Lang stadium lot offers those who show early a $5 spot, but the parking lot may fill up early. Fans may also park in the nearby South Core garage, reachable from First Ave. S., between First and Second Streets for $5. Another option is the BayWalk garage, a six-minute walk from the stadium, on Second Ave. N., between First and Second Sts.  Rates for these facilities are usually $5 but could be up to $10, depending on what other downtown special events may coincide with games, such as on the Fourth of July. Limited parking is also offered in the Mahaffey Theater garage for $5 when the garage is not in use by theater patrons.
If fans decide to park on-street instead of lots and garages, they should pay close attention to the posted time limits or other requirements.
Downtown Looper Trolley
Want to save energy for the game? Look for the bright red and yellow Downtown Looper trolley and hop aboard for just 50 cents. The Downtown Looper passes by Al Lang Stadium, with a stop located at the Hilton, 333 First St. S., every 15 minutes, and circulates between all of the city’s hotels, attractions and major parking facilities.
The St. Petersburg Trolley’s Downtown Looper operates 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with service until midnight on Saturday. For shuttle schedules and a downloadable route map, visit http://www.loopertrolley.com/SchedulesFares.html.
We will continue to honor our Queen of Hearts, Marissa, and her two toy Poodles and one Border Collie during this event too!  Marissa is a 19 year old Type 1 diabetic from Dade City.  She has worked hard to train three Sugar Dogs.  We hope that our Princess Kaitlin from Safety Harbor will join us as well.  She too is a Type 1 diabetic teenager, who has trained a beautiful Collie as her Sugar Dog.  Come join us and show off your Sugar Dog.
Diabetic assistance by these animals is protected under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA).
We are honored to support the Dade City Youth Council!
It is a 100% outdoor event.
If you are local,  please join us.  If you are not local, we practically guarantee there is a St. Patrick’s Day event near you.  Take your Sugar Dog and show it off!
